GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES $1.5 MILLION IN LITERACY AWARDS
Grants to help adult, children reading programs

MADISON--Gov. Tommy G. Thompson today announced that nearly $1.5 million in literacy grants have been awarded to 24 organizations throughout the state to provide top-quality literacy services through child tutoring and workplace initiatives.

Gov. Thompson said the workplace literacy grants will be used to train workplace tutors who can provide adult workers with literacy skills that are job specific for employment, retention and advancement.  The Child and Family Tutoring Program grant funding will help children eligible for TANF improve their reading, writing, and math skills, and it will also help provide parents with the skills to tutor their children.

"These grants will provide adults and children with intense literacy services that will help them achieve at home, at work and in their communities," Gov. Thompson said.  "The grants will help families overcome the challenges of reading and enable them to reach their fullest potential."

The grants will be used by local education and literacy organizations to help families achieve self-sufficiency. The grants, included in the 1999-2001 state budget, are funded by the federal government’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.
