DWD Analysis of Wisconsin's W-2 Statistics for July 1998

W-2 data table for July 1998

Governor's W-2 Anniversary news release

The number of families receiving cash assistance under W-2 declined statewide in July from a month earlier, while the number of those in unsubsidized work activities increased.

Statewide, the number of family wage earners receiving W-2 cash assistance as they gained work experience in various types of subsidized employment was 10,875.

That was down 227, or 2.1 per cent, from the month before and to the lowest level in the 11 months of W-2.

Five counties reported no one receiving W-2 cash assistance in July. All continued to provide other services to W2 participants, including food stamps and medical assistance and, in some cases, other types of support through what W-2 officials call "case management" activities.

The number of those in unsubsidized activities, most of them employed, rose statewide for the second straight month to 5,021. That was up 157 families, or 3.2 per cent, fromJune and followed an increase of 146 between May and June.

Those in this group accounted for 31.6 per cent of all families in W-2 last month.

Statewide, the number of families in all types of W-2 activities declined over the month by 70, to 15,896. It was the lowest that count has been since W-2 started Sept. 1, 1997.

The trend seen statewide was much the same in Milwaukee County for July.

In Milwaukee County, the number of families in all types of W-2 activities declined slightly over the month, down 90 to 13,344. That was a drop of just under one per cent.

The number in unsubsidized activities rose to 3,886, or up 38 (1.0 per cent) from 3,848 in June. The number receiving cash help under W-2 declined to 9,458, down 128 (1.3 per cent) from the previous month's level of 9,586.

Statewide, the number of those receiving food stamps fell over the month by 1.6 per cent, or 1,193 cases, to 71,691. The medical assistance caseload was about unchanged from June, down just 39 to July's level of 148,633.
