Labor force hits 3 million;
employment at all-time high

Wisconsin's labor force hit 3 million for the first time in history this July, as Wisconsin's unemployment rate remained below the 4.0 percent mark for the 30th straight month.

Unemployment was 3.8 percent, seasonally adjusted. That is up marginally from June's 3.6 percent but still a full percentage point below the nation's 4.8 percent.

The number of jobholders in Wisconsin was a record 2,890,500 in July (up 9,000 from June) while the total labor force (which includes unemployed job seekers) hit 3,000,300.

The 9,000 increase in jobholders is 3,300 more than historically experienced in the month of July but the 3,100 decline in the number of jobless workers is only about one-third of the normal decline. That caused the rate to move up slightly.

Employers reported 44,300 more jobs on their payrolls than existed 12 months ago. Among job categories only government employment showed a significant change in July; those jobs were down 4,800 more than normal.

Madison yielded its No. #1 ranking for lowest unemployment rate in the nation to Sioux Falls, S.D., in June. The state's unemployment rate was the 11th lowest.
