Disaster Unemployment Assistance
Available Until August 11, 1997


Workers in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties who lost jobs or wages due to the heavy rains and severe storms of June 21-23 have until 4:30 PM on Monday, August 11 to apply for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA).

DUA is a federal program to help people, including self-employed farm and non-farm workers, who lose employment or wages as a result of a major disaster.

Those eligible for DUA includes people who:

· were unable to reach their regular place of employment as a direct result of the flooding
· were to begin employment but could not go to work as a direct result of the flooding
· lost work because of an injury caused as a direct result of the flooding
· became the major support of a household because the head of the household died as a direct result of the flooding.

Applications can be filed from 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, through August 11, by calling the state Unemployment Insurance Division. In the Milwaukee Metropolitan area, call 438-7700. Outside the local calling area, call toll free, 1-800-822-5246.
