Below are common work incentives that SSI/SSDI beneficiaries may qualify for if they are receiving SSI or SSDI due to their disability. However, eligibility for these incentives varies. If you have questions or want to know if you would qualify for one or more of the below incentives, please talk to your DVR counselor about receiving a benefit analysis.

If you receive SSDI or SSI due to a disability and are between the age of 18 and 64, you automatically have the Ticket to Work from the Social Security Administration. If you want to go to work, you can use this Ticket to Work to get employment services from DVR. The goal of Ticket to Work is to help you go to work so that you will not need SSI or SSDI. PASS stands for “Plan to Achieve Self Support”. This program, if approved by Social Security, would allow you to save money from other incomes beside your SSI/SSDI check to pay for things needed to achieve your employment goal. MAPP stands for “Medicaid Purchase Plan”. This program allows individuals that may no longer qualify for Medicaid (due to working) to purchase their Medicaid. Refer to the links below for more information regarding the requirements and limitations of this work incentive.
IRWE stands for “Impairment Related Work Expenses”. This program allows qualified individuals to subtract out work expense related to their employment from their wages before the wages are counted towards their benefit payment. Refer to the links below for more information regarding the requirements and limitations of this work incentive.
BOND stands for “Benefit Offset National Demonstration”. This program is a trial program put out by Social Security to determine how to treat beneficiaries’ cash earnings and to determine what level of benefit counseling appears to be most helpful in allowing beneficiaries to reach their highest level of independence. These seminars are great at explaining work incentives available to individuals that get both SSI and SSDI and how they can help individuals return to work. The BPQY can be useful in getting basic information and for learning things such as if the consumer is in the BOND program. However, please note that DVR counselors are not Benefit Specialist and should always offer a Benefit Analysis to consumers getting benefits due to a disability to avoid things such as overpayment to the consumer or a surprise lose of benefits such as medical or state benefits.

Below is a link for the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amounts. This amount changes each year and is different for blind and non-blind individuals. This amount is important to understand as a person who is earning more than the monthly amount (net of impairment-related work expenses) is ordinarily considered to be engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity and no longer requires benefits.
